Little pleasures

For the past few years, I’ve been regularly tuning in to RTHK and downloading their weekly Top 20 countdown of pop music from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China. It’s where I get my Chinese music fix.

I grew up listening to Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung. Although they’ve both passed away, I listen to RTHK’s weekly countdown hoping to discover another Anita or Leslie. Perhaps this search is futile, as things you love as a kid can never be replaced, but I can at least try.

Lately, I love the sounds of Eason Chan. There’s a sultry and soulful depth to his singing, and listening to him is the closest I’ve come to my memory of when I first listened to Leslie Cheung or Anita Mui.

There’s also something nice to the fact that Chinese pop music hasn’t changed much through the decades. Sure the singers come and go, but the sentimentality embedded in the genre is constant. In these days of flux and uncertainty, we can all use some stability, and sentiment, in our lives.
